Some people see motorcycles as inherently dangerous, and it's for that reason many parents will happily buy their child a car when they're old enough but are opposed to them getting a bike. In fact, the mere thought of it can fill parents with dread.

It's understandable that you want to protect your child, but motorcycles aren't as dangerous as you think and letting your child have one instead of a car can actually be really beneficial. Here are the reasons you should reconsider your position and get your teenager two wheels instead of four.

Modern bikes are much safer

Far from the difficulty, unwieldy machines you may be picturing when you think of motorcycles, modern bikes are fitted with a range of safety features like traction control, to make them easier to control. That equals greater safety. Don't forget, too, that helmets and other pieces of essential safety equipment are tougher than ever before, so if an accident does happen, it's less likely to result in serious injury.

It teaches your child extra responsibility

If you let your teenager ride a motorcycle, they'll understand that you're worried about them. That in itself is enough to make them extra cautious when they're riding, and they will quickly learn to be responsible motorists. A big part of motorcycle training is safety, and their instructor won't let them progress until they're certain they're responsible enough to do so.

They're cheaper to run

A motorcycle typically has much greater fuel economy than a car, so the running costs are immediately slashed. If your child has a job, they're more likely to be able to pay for all the fuel themselves. Add to that the fact that the bike itself will be cheaper than a car, and it can be a big money-saver.

A bike takes up less space at home

You probably already have a car you drive yourself, and perhaps you even have two. Adding another one into the mix means parking is a struggle. A bike takes up far less space, so there's room for everyone to park comfortably without needing to leave vehicles out on the road.

Maybe you'll get to go for a ride

If you've never ridden a motorcycle before, it's a fantastic experience that you shouldn't miss out on. Once your child gets their licence, they'll be happy to take you out as a passenger, and you'll wonder why you ever worried at all.
